I have been involved in the meat game in varying capacities since I landed on this earth with my folks being Sheep and Cattle Graziers and many other members of the family being butchers. Like many Farmers I reckoned someone was making a heck of a lot of money out of the protein industry and it wasn't the producers so I went and set up a paddock to plate business. I could do everything except the slaughtering which is heavily controlled by government legislation. One thing that shocked me when I set up my multi-layered enterprise was the cost of slaughtering. It was and still is very low. It is volume that allows abattoirs to make a dollar. However with that volume comes a lot of issues. Namely the number one input which is labour. The labour market in the meat industry locally is very highly regulated and highly unionised.
As a farmer it is essential that I breed the best progeny possible and cull out genetics that are not helpful for my flocks productivity, almost 100% of my males and about 60% of my females are not able to breed on. This ensures only the best genetics are kept and I import improved genetics via stud rams. Likewise with my dogs which have always been the backbone of my farm work force. I only breed when I have an upcoming need and always look to the best pairings to ensure the dogs are purpose breed for the tasks required.
Between the 18 and 20th of January 1788 the greatest armada of ships ever assembeld reached its land of destination New South Wales eleven vessels carrying about 1,487 people and stores had travelled for 252 days for more than 15,000 miles (24,000km) without losing a ship. Forty-eight people had died on the journey, a death rate of just over three per cent. These 1,487 people laid the foundations for the modern Australian Nation.
There are few people on this earth who sail through life on calm seas with good tail winds and I am certainly not one of them.
Knowing that when we each reach a chicane, that we are not alone is something that really assists us in the journey around the obstacles we face and it is always the case, we are never alone. The truth is there are people around us willing to share the load of life's issues that we willingly take on but are strangely unwilling to share with others.
Since Animals Australia and RSPCA led the expose on the Indonesian Beef Slaughter Industry there has been a torrent of support on a Ban of the Australian Live Export Trade with that Country and the Middle East, which has been similarly exposed in the past for a poor animal welfare record.
