There are few people on this earth who sail through life on calm seas with good tail winds and I am certainly not one of them.
Knowing that when we each reach a chicane, that we are not alone is something that really assists us in the journey around the obstacles we face and it is always the case, we are never alone. The truth is there are people around us willing to share the load of life's issues that we willingly take on but are strangely unwilling to share with others.
After my ParaRescue accident I learnt the hard way that I needed to share the difficulties I faced thanks to my inability to even get to the bathroom and after a few months still an inability to be mobile alone. Maybe some folks like me need that smack in the face to say 'Hey don't be greedy - share the problems as well as the good times'.
Since I woke up in hospital after my surgery which put my foot back where it was supposed to be, I have had people willing to share the load and have learnt that I have to accept. Yeah sure there are those you think should be helping you, but it is a glass half empty attitude if you focus on who is Not helping you rather than who is.
I watched a hilarious movie a few days ago 'Bridesmaids' and in it the lead was complaining to a fellow bridesmaid fat friend that her 'bride' best friend wasn't there for her and she had no friends..... the fat friend ended up smacking her around and letting her have it... after all she was not able to see that right in front of her was a friend, a friend who wanted to help and a friend who WAS there.
Often that is the case with us humans who have so much we forget what is right here in front of us, that we have what we need to make it each day the best it can be and fall asleep each night knowing that we have made the most of it.
For me the greatest way I have found to get back on track is to make goals .... achievable goals. Starting with small ones...like getting to the bathroom, then medium ones.... getting back from the bathroom and bigger ones like getting out of the house and walking with my dog 'Rosie'.
Each day I have goals, and whilst I fought off the depression which comes from immobility, they were the key to getting me outside in the sunshine and fresh air which in itself gets the mind in a better place. I would ensure I had my minor goals, my medium ones and my major that I would have in the distance but the one that was most important and work backwards from that.
Now I have a great goal that I am striving for in the distance, Sydney's City2Surf Marathon to raise money for The Sydney Dogs and Cats Home. So I have plenty of small goals of getting more and more laps of the local oval each morning and more pushups at each park bench I pass.
