Between the 18 and 20th of January 1788 the greatest armada of ships ever assembeld reached its land of destination New South Wales eleven vessels carrying about 1,487 people and stores had travelled for 252 days for more than 15,000 miles (24,000km) without losing a ship. Forty-eight people had died on the journey, a death rate of just over three per cent. These 1,487 people laid the foundations for the modern Australian Nation.
They were not alone on the continent, there had already been many migrations over thousand of years, the first of these departed from modern day India about 55,000 years ago and later from our near northern neighbour modern day Papua New Guinea probably about 4000 years ago. All of these groups and all since have settled in what is now Australia. They have come slowly or in waves such as during the First Fleet, the Gold Rush and the Post WW2 Population Policies of the Australian Government. People have come to Australia from all over the earth, as said initially from India and PNG, then the British Empire, China, Europe, the Pacific Islands and more recently Africa, the Middle East and Asia. All these people have been settlers not invaders.
This week Sydney City Council has done the extraordinary by following Marrickville Councils lead in forgetting to be a council and dabbling in divisive politics outside their scope of duty. On a Council Vote they have elected 8 to 2 to change the wording of 'European Arrivals' to an 'Invasion'.
How can you call a settlement party made up of women and children, sheep and chickens, window frames and ploughs as anything but a settlement party. Invasion is exactly that something negative and wrong, like cane toads and spiny star fish and that is exactly what this council want to re-brand our history of the past 223 years on this nation as something that it was not.
It is something I find difficult to comprehend why there is this segment of the Australian population that is so desperate to paint this incredible journey that the nation has been on as anything but good. They are the same people that look at Australian culture as void and boring, our food as bland and revolting, our flag as a sinful banner of hate and cruelty and our hundreds of thousands of soldiers as baby killing fiends.
We have a great culture, we have been forced to lose much of it thanks to the modern era and modern realities, such as the demise of Gymkhanas, Camp Drafts, Debutent Balls, Friday Night country hall dances, greasy pig races, Country Yabbie, Horse, Camel, Goat and Sheep races, Community BBQ's, B n S Balls, Royal Shows, Town Shows, they are still there in pockets of our Nation and they do help define us.
Today it seems that we are forced to Choose which version of History we follow... for me I'll stick with the one that is most plausible and gives me the most evidence. The one where the British settled Australia with women and children and brought the rule of Law with it.. the same Law that ensured that there are over 500,000 people today who define themselves as Aboriginal Australians, of which there are parliamentarians, judges, national heroes, artists, academics and sporting stars....oh and did I mention this 2.5% of that Modern Australian Population controls about 20% of the continent, clear evidence that if there was an invasion it was a monumental stuff up
