Reading the 'weird' sections of the online news is something I like to do every now and again. However when reading through news.com.au's section today I noticed a story about Geep's that is offspring which is a sheep crossed with a goat.
Unfortunately this does occur and the young in my experience is is very very rare and most often such an animal will die very young and look rather mong, when I was a kid often stockman would point out a mong lamb saying that it was a geep however I have never seen one as an adult and looking back thpugh there could have been actual geeps my personal thinking is it was just deformed lambs. Scientifically it has been observed that it can occur and has 57 chromosons which is between the 54 of a sheep and the 60 of a goat.
The 'Geep at Gosford' however is just a simple straight forward sheep. Probably one of a Damara Sire which has confused a rather stupid writer who probably wouldn't know which end to feed the animal.
Just so you know sheep and goats can both come in many colours as well as pure white, they can both have curly or straight horns, they both can be muscular and stout or be long legged and camel looking and they can both have either wool or hair. The simple way to tell them apart for those not familiar with the miriad of breeds of each species, the key difference is the tail....if it points up its a goat, if it points down its a sheep.
