The Public flock to the Queen and yet the Media struggle to cover her presence, the US president on the other hand has the Media doing one armed cartwheels.
I find it the strangest thing, the Australian Media, especially when we look at its coverage of our Monarchy and in particular the Queen's recent visit in which the media was desperate for any hint of a negative story, or hiccup...unfortunately for them they didn't get it even in Melbourne where reporters where climbing over themselves to try and get at least one 'Occupy Melbourne' protester... just being within Coo-ee of the Sovereign.
Most coverage was about it being her last visit, or that only supplied school children and the elderly were in attendance... which is rubbish, everywhere she went thousands flocked to get a glimpse, people waited for many many hours in the hope of getting a good position to see her, I should know I flew all the way to Melbourne to do just that in a totally packed Federation Square... yes the same place that Oprah 'wooed' the nation with a fraction of the crowd..
The Queen, is our Queen and that is one of the many and varied reasons so many take the time out of their lives to see her on her many visits her and yet the media does its best to ignore her, unlike the US President, which the media seemed to turn into some sort of beatlemania... which is so strange really, the man is a politician... just a foreign one. Don't get me wrong I have deep respect for our closest allies' leader, and a personal admiration for Barack Obama who as lead such an exotic life and yet has been able to rise to the leadership of the Free World, but I do not understand the fawning of the Australian Media.
Funny thing is...it reminds me of the the way the American Media fawned over the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge a few months back. Perhaps its just a case of excitement at the unfamiliar and exotic.....both Obama and Oprah are definitely that the Queen. I suppose is that one thing in our world that is so steadfast so familiar and .. well lets face it few people on this earth remember a time when she was not on the Throne.
...Ok so maybe I do get it now.....its the old...oooo look shiny pretty things....
