I was only 3 but I will never forget Matilda's blink as she worked her way around QEII Stadium for the 1982 Commonwealth Games. The Giant Kangaroo was my first introduction to elite level sport, and all the excitement and friendliness that comes from the family of nations games.
On hearing that the Gold Coast has won the right to host the 2018 Games I felt a wonderful sense of nostalgia and excitement for my favourite sporting event to again be held here in Queensland and inspire so many all over again.
