The Leichhardt federal Liberal-National MP spoke last night at a Liberal fundraiser in Sydney that also saw speeches by City of Sydney councillor Christine Forster and Lucy Turnbull, former Sydney Lord Mayor and wife of Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull.
Entsch’s bill, which is backed by a number of Liberal, Labor, Greens and independent MPs, is unlikely to make it to a ballot following the Coalition party room’s refusal to allow their members a conscience vote.
Instead, Abbott has said a “people’s vote” on marriage equality, now considered more likely to be in the form of a plebiscite rather than a binding referendum, will be held if the Coalition retains power after the next federal election – possibly pushing a vote out until 2018 or later.
On Friday the 28th of August Colo High School participated in "Wear It Purple Day". This day is about creating a safe place for all of our students no matter what their sex, sexuality or gender identity is. This year’s theme was "Colour you Perception" which challenges young people to think about the assumptions they might make about others, and try to recolour the way they perceive the world and those around them. At the end of the day, everyone is unique and has the right to be proud of who they are.
Guest Speaker Sessions:
Farmer Dave (David Graham from Big Brother 2006) – Has dedicated his life to dogs’ betterment in society and through his business, the Farmer Dave Dog Centre. Dave is also an advocate for gay rights and marriage equality.
Amy McNeilage – Former Colo High School student who is now the Deputy Editor of Daily Life. She was previously the Education Reporter at The Sydney Morning Herald. She was named the 2015 Walkley Young Australian Journalist of the Year.
Special Film Screening: "Gayby Baby"
Colo High School has secured the rights to hold a pre-screening of the film before its official release in cinemas in September.
Former Goondiwindi boy David Graham grew up around strong homophobia and was the victim of a gay bashing attack in Brisbane, before coming out on Big Brother and dedicating himself to fighting against homophobia.
WHEN a gang of homophobic thugs bashed David Graham and left him for dead in a Brisbane street, the former Goondiwindi man took it upon himself to take a stand and open the minds and hearts of the Australian public. It was the tipping point for the former Big Brother contestant, who won the hearts of Australians as Farmer Dave - the everyday bloke who 'came out' on television after battling with his feelings his whole life.
If "Farmer Dave" Graham looks a little overheated, he's only got himself to blame. The former reality TV star and his four-legged pal, Sydney, had just completed Graham's very first boot camp for humans and dogs in Sydney's Centennial Park when our photo was taken.
Starting a dual-species fitness movement has long been a goal of Graham's, and he told S it was the reason he first settled in Sydney after his Big Brother stint in 2006.
"I had the plan, and then four years ago I had a bad parachute accident and broke pretty much most of my body," he says. "I wanted to get fit again and knew it would be a long road. I've only just come good and I'm finally able to run again. But recovering was the perfect way to develop this concept."
THERE are very simple reasons as to why farmer David Graham’s life has evolves around dogs.
“They have been there since day one for me,” he says.
“As the youngest of 11 kids growing up in the Outback, they were my mates when I was left out of all the older kids’ adventures, they were my counsellors when I’d come home shattered from the trials of boarding school or dealing with having to shoot thousands of starving sheep during drought.
“They are my teachers, my mates, my entertainers, my confidants and most importantly on a cold night — especially out on a stock camp in winter — my swagwarmers.”
Graham grabbed headlines in 2006 when he came out as gay during season six of Big Brother. Since then, he has become a prominent advocate for dogs, and is an ambassador for the Animal Welfare League, Australian Working Dog Rescue and Working Breed Rehab.
